A postpartum doula is a trained professional who offers emotional and physical support during the first weeks and months after birth. They focus on helping parents recover from pregnancy and childbirth, care for their newborn, and adjust to parenthood during the postpartum recovery period.
-
Postpartum doulas help reduce physical exhaustion and supports family functioning in a busy household by helping organize, assisting with light household chores (laundry, dishes, tidying) so parents can rest and recover, meal prep or plan, sleep support for parents assisting with nap schedules or nighttime routines for better rest, and sibling care so the parent can shower, rest, or attend to another child.
-
Postpartum doulas offer emotional support during this time-frame to reduce stress, encourage self-care, and remind parents they are not alone in their struggles of transition.
-
Postpartum doulas offer support of transitioning back into work, basic newborn care and development, evidence-based practices of infant feeding and sleep, and advocacy for families during this period to find support within the community.
-
Kentucky Strong Mama Doula offers different packages with different numbers of hours in increments of 4-hours or 8-hours. Packages can be a la carte to each family, too.
Postpartum doulas usually start 1-2 days after the birth of the child. -
Kentucky Strong Mama Doula accepts Medicaid and can write a SuperBill for other insurances, but does not guarantee repayment from insurance companies.
-
Postpartum doulas are usually booked within the late 2nd-3rd trimester. Kentucky Strong Mama Doula care recommends consulting with and meeting at least once in-person or telehealth before 34 weeks of pregnancy.
-
Anyone expecting a baby, loss of a baby (miscarriage, ectopic baby, or other loss), know someone they want to gift doula services for after birth or a loss.
-
No, postpartum doulas do not replace medical care or give out medical advice. Please refer to your medical support team for clinical concerns. However, a doula can help with evidence-based research to form knowledgeable questions to ask during medical appointments.
-
Research shows that parents with doula support often:
Feel less anxious and have a lower risk of postpartum depression or anxiety
Gain increased confidence and satisfaction with their parenting role
Get more rest and time to recover physically, emotionally, and mentally
Learn to implement self-care, rest and recovery with support networks.
